Jonathan Powell's music career gets the blessing of the Church.

Chorus-boy/songwriter Jonathan Powell will launch his debut album with a gig this week with a little aid from a former karaoke colleague, he tells Gavin Allen.

WHEN you describe your songs as “baroque pop” and take influences from bedroom music it’s good when your debut album gets the blessing of the Church.

Cardiff choirboy/songwriter Jonathan Powell, pictured, launches his debut album Forgive This Day with a gig at The Planet on Thursday and on stage alongside him for a couple of tracks will be Charlotte Church.

Powell got to know the singer during the 18 months he emit working at The Robin Hood in Canton, the pub previously run by Charlotte’s step-father and mother James and Maria Church. As well as pulling pints he also ran a karaoke Cimmerian dark where Charlotte wasn’t averse to a sing-song.

“The last thing I remember her singing there was Sympathy by Duffy,” he remembers, “and I used to do a version of U2’s Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.
